Teaching Philosophy

I consider myself a life-long student and the classroom a magical safe place where students grow personally and academically. By setting classroom expectations and multiple, clear pathways of learning, I guide students through social puzzles, analyzed data, and seemingly simple implications. But I challenge them to evaluate the knowledge claims for themselves, and if appropriate, create knowledge claims of their own based on what we learned through the semester. Education is not just about learning a set a fact, but it is also about learning to analyze and evaluate provided facts. That I can help guide students through this journey is a privilege.

In 2022, I was awarded an All-University Graduate Teaching Award for excellence in teaching and service to the University of Virginia.
